Dallas-Based Fintech Startup Promotes Legal and Compliance Veteran to General Counsel

Meritize promotes Daniel Chang to general counsel; education finance company funds students based on merit and potential, rather than credit score.

FRISCO, TX April 29, 2020 Meritize, the developer of merit-based financing and career solutions, today announced the promotion of Daniel Chang as general counsel and chief compliance officer. He previously served as chief compliance officer and senior counsel, first joining the company in March 2019.

“Education consumers too often face serious uncertainty when it comes to financing their education, often because of backward-looking measures that fail to account for accomplishments in education, work and service used to evaluate credit,” said Daniel Chang, general counsel and chief compliance officer CCO of Meritize. “In today’s uncertain labor market, it has never been more urgent for us to rethink the historic models we’ve used to finance education and training. This work is critical to helping connect displaced talent with economic opportunity.”

Now serving a national network of more than 300 training providers that offer more than 3,800 unique and in-demand training programs, Meritize is committed to expanding access to skills training through merit-based lending practices that take into account an individual’s academic, military or work achievements to enhance credit evaluation, award credit for merit and make financing options more affordable.

“Dan has played a critical role in supporting our growth to date as a member of our leadership team,” said Chris Keaveney, CEO of Meritize. “His promotion is a reflection of the deep legal, financial and industry expertise he brings to the team.”

Chang brings over 15 years of experience handling complex legal and regulatory compliance matters where he has represented Fortune 500 and 100 companies and worked with dozens of fintech companies. Prior to joining Meritize, he served as the Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer for Marketplace Lending at Cross River Bank, a supervised financial institution with over $1.5 billion assets under management, where he led the bank’s fintech strategic partnership compliance management system. Chang also previously served as Director of Compliance and Associate General Counsel for Avant, Inc., a leading online lending platform and software provider. Chang received his B.A. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his J.D. from DePaul University College of Law.
